The Girl and the Unicorn

This is a story written and illustrated by my six-year-old daughter, who wanted me to share it here for anyone to read.

You can read more about the process of making this book here, and you can purchase paperback (or ebook) copies of the book here to support her writing (seriously, Roth IRA here she comes).

If you have any kind words to share, I know it would mean the world to her. And if you’d like to share a picture of her book out in the wild by email or in the comments, she’d be over the moon.

The Girl and the Unicorn

by Mia White

This book is dedicated to young readers like me.

Chapter 1

Once upon a time, there was a Little Girl and a Unicorn. They met outside on a farm, and the Unicorn said, “Hi! Can you live with me in the Diamond Castle? We will have pancakes in the morning!”

Then, the Little Girl said, “Yes!”

Then they went off through the Unicorn gardens into the castle. They went to the kitchen, and they decided to eat dinner: pasta with pink sauce and meatballs on top. The Unicorn was a very clean eater, and not a drop of sauce got on her rainbow mane.

Then, they went to read a book in bed. The book was about rainbows and diamonds. After, they were tired and went to sleep.

Unicorn dreamed about cupcakes and cookies that were so big that she lived inside of them. The Little Girl dreamed about her and Unicorn walking up a giant apple with a staircase carved around it.

The Little Girl woke up. She yawned. She stretched. Then she lay back down.

Then, Unicorn woke up. She stretched. She did a quick workout on her treadmill, and then she made breakfast. She made pancakes with whipped cream, chocolate chips, syrup, and strawberries. The Little Girl smelled the pancakes, got up, and walked to the breakfast table. She saw the Unicorn and the pancakes, so she stayed at the breakfast table for a very long time. She even got thirds.

Then she sat down at her new desk in the castle library. She stretched again, yawned a small yawn, leaned back in her chair, and thought. She was reading some books about donuts when Unicorn walked in. Unicorn said, “Do you want to go fishing in the castle lake?”

The Girl thought and thought, and then she said, “Yes.”

When she walked outside, she smelled the honey scent of the honey trees and then the fishy smell of fish. She got a small bucket to collect some honey and a big bucket of water for the fish. She caught two fish, one pink and one blue, and Unicorn used her horn to collect honey for dinner.

Then they went to the woods to pick some apples from the apple tree. They saw a squirrel, a bunny, and picked berries from the berry bush on the way back to the castle. The thorns were spiky.

Then the Little Girl got thirsty, so Unicorn carried her back to the castle to get a drink. They filled up a clear glass cup with peach-flavored sparkling water.

Then they sat on the library carpet to read books together. They were really funny books, and the Unicorn laughed so hard she snorted.

Later, the Little Girl was sewing a new rug for the library.

Then, it was time for lunch. They had PB&J with honey (but not fish). Then the Little Girl was still hungry, so they had some peanut butter with apples. They walked back to the bedroom and were happy that it was still tidy and neat.

When the rug was done, they knitted little animals. They did a bunny and a Unicorn and a Little Girl (and they were very cute). They put them on the bed, and they were so inspired by how nice it all looked that they both decided to make a drawing to capture the scene.

Then, they went downstairs, which had a soft red rug that was nice on their bare feet and hooves. The Little Girl changed out of her pajamas into a nice soft red shirt and nice soft red pants. They got a snack from the pantry (salty pretzels) and lay down on the couch to watch a movie (about unicorns and yetis).

After half the movie, it was time for dinner. They had chicken sandwiches, and Unicorn added some edible magic sparkles. For the second part of the movie, they had popcorn with milk and relaxed on the couch.

After, they brushed their teeth with two toothbrushes each–pink and violet–with flashing lights, read some magazines, cuddled up with a blue blanket, and went to sleep.

Chapter 2

One day, the Unicorn and the Girl took a walk by the lake. The Girl sat on a bench to rest and read books, and Unicorn went fishing. But instead of catching a fish, the Unicorn surprised a Narwhal.

“Hello!” said the Unicorn.

“Hi,” said the Narwhal. “Do you want to live with me in my seaweed palace?”

The Little Girl stopped reading and raised her head. “Thank you,” she said. “We usually live in the Diamond Castle, but we’d love to visit. We should try to build a tunnel to connect our two homes.”

They gave it a try. The Little Girl went first, walking from the land to the water and into the Seaweed Palace. She saw seaweed benches and other seaweed furniture, so she sat down to read. The Narwhal swam to her kitchen and called out to offer her seaweed French toast.

“Could I perhaps have my French toast without seaweed?” The Girl asked. “I think I’m still learning to like it.”

The Narwhal said yes and brought her some French toast and milk.

Then, the Unicorn joined. The Narwhal said, “Would you like to read books in the Seaweed Library?”

The Unicorn said, “Yes!”

The Little Girl started reading on a seaweed couch, which was very comfortable but smelled a bit salty. They read books about undersea creatures like octopi, jellyfish, seahorses, narwhals, great white sharks, whale sharks, and other varieties of shark. And seaweed.

Then the Narwhal asked if she could come over and visit the Diamond Castle. The Unicorn made her a magic bubble so she could breathe and swim out of the water. Then the Narwhal swam through the tunnel to the palace.

“Welcome to the palace!” they said. “Come with us to see our garden.”

When they arrived, they saw that some of the fruits and vegetables were ripe.

“Do you want to help us pick some?”

“Yes!” said the Narwhal.

So they picked potatoes from the ground, then walked to some berry bushes and picked the juiciest blackberries (some they ate right then). They decided to bake the potatoes, so they ate some more blackberries with the wild berries they’d picked earlier while the potatoes were baking.

Then the alarm went ding-dong, so the Unicorn went to take them out of the oven while the Girl stayed with the Narwhal. Once they’d cooled a little, the Unicorn added some magic sparkles and the Narwhal added some magic bubbles, and then they ate them with some very green herbs on top, and they were very yummy.

Then it was time for the Narwhal to go home since she had an appointment at the sea-dentist to make sure her teeth were clean. The Little Girl walked her back through the tunnel and said goodbye after giving her a big hug.

The Girl and the Unicorn returned to the library and sat on a couch to read. It was so comfy that the Girl fell asleep.

While the Girl napped, the Unicorn scratched her hooves and brushed her mane and decided to write about the things she liked. She also made a wishlist. Then, she also fell asleep.

Suddenly, the Unicorn heard a sound and woke up. She saw that the Girl was still asleep, so she carried her to her bed and put her favorite stuffed animal with her and tucked her in.

She went back to the garden to plant some carrots. She put the seeds into the ground, watered them, waited and waited, added some more dirt, and sang it a nice plant song. The seeds grew magically, and when she saw them sprout, she decided to go back to the kitchen for a drink. She filled up a clear glass with ice, water, some fruit, some more ice and more water, and then she drank a refreshing glass of fruity water. She returned to their room and started to write again.

Then the Little Girl woke up. She stretched and yawned and lay back down. She noticed the smell of the water and asked if she could have some as well. Then Unicorn put ice, water, and strawberries and more and more and more. She gave it to the Girl, who sat in a rocking chair. She took a big sip, and the Girl said, “I will always be happy with you.”

Later, they got a phone call. It was Narwhal, who said she had a wiggly tooth. They said “good for you” and told her she was welcome to visit anytime. The Narwhal said she needed to rest at home, and they understood.

Chapter 3

One day, the Unicorn, the Little Girl, and the Narwhal set off to hike in the forest next to the lake, and there they saw a pup. The Little Girl said, “Hi, what’s your name?”

The pup, which was a puppycorn, said, “Pupsicle.”

The Girl said, “That’s a great name. Do you want to come live with us?”

Pupsicle said, “I live in the bush with my friend Bun-Bun.”

“Where is she?”

“She is eating popsicles right now.”

“Do you want us to move your bush to our castle?”

“Are there any foxes or wolves?”

“No, just some garden plants.”

“Any sharks that could bite us?”

“No.”

Then Pupsicle said, “Okay, we could give that a try.”

“Would you like us to make the bush a little less spiky and more comfy as well, maybe some new blankets?”

“Yes, that would be lovely.”

“It’s time to start moving, and let’s do it quick before any foxes or wolves try to follow us.”

“Can we be near the carrots?”

“Yes, of course. But make sure Bun-Bun saves some for our dinner and carrot cake.”

Everyone made introductions and worked as a team to move the bush. They replanted and trimmed the bush next to the magic carrot bush. Then Pupsicle planted a popsicle bush next to their new home.

He asked if the Girl and Unicorn had any new books they could borrow for their new bush home. The Girl said “of course” and gave them a carrot cookbook first. The Girl said, “Enjoy your new home. We hope you enjoy it. Call us whenever you need anything on the magic phone.”

And they said, “We love it.”

They made carrot cupcakes and carrot cake and then sat down to watch a show on a mini tablet that Unicorn had magicked up that had real shows on it. The show was about a donut that fell into a lemonade lake. They ate the carrot cake and shared the cupcakes with their friends.

Chapter 4

One day, Unicorn, the Little Girl, and Pupsicle took a walk on a nice day to the park. They saw a bird on the ground hooting sadly. They checked on her to make sure she was okay, but she was not okay. She had an injured wing. They helped her and put a cast on to help it heal. Pupsicle gave her some owl treats, and Unicorn magicked up a wingchair for her to use while she was getting better.

“What’s your name?” the Little Girl asked.

“My name is Owly,” said the Owl.

“Nice to meet you, Owly. If you need anything during your recovery, please call us whenever you need on the magic phone so we can help you.”

“Thanks!”

“Bye, see you later.”

They played at the park for a while, and the Girl practiced swinging. Then she fell off the swing and scratched her leg. The Unicorn wiped off the blood with a wipe and made her a bandage. The Girl said “thank you,” and it was time to go home.

When they got home, the Little Girl wanted to start a lemonade stand, and the Unicorn wanted to play tennis. Pupsicle wanted to start a donut and cinnamon roll bakery that also made baguettes. Bun-Bun wanted to have an orange juice stand.

They worked together and hung a red sheet on top of the stands because it was very sunny. Then they got sunhats and sunglasses, because it was still really very sunny.

Bun-Bun decided she needed some balls so that they could also play with the customers. Then, their first customer came, and then more, and then the orders really came in, and the customers went from stand to stand sampling the drinks and the food. They were very busy and made $15. It was so much cash. They also took some orders by phone with credit cards. They decided to take a break and close for lunch. Their last customer got lemonade and pancakes.

The Little Girl did rock, paper, scissors with Bun-Bun to see who got to hold the money on the way home. The Little Girl won.

For lunch, Pupsicle got some carrots and popsicles and extra donuts from the stand, and extra lemonade and orange juice too. Bun-Bun and the Girl came too. Then Unicorn returned but she was very sweaty from tennis, so she decided to shower before lunch. Then she got out and had a refreshing lemonade and a donut, followed by pasta and chicken nuggets. Then Narwhal came by for a visit, and she had some pasta and apples. Then it was time for everyone to go back home. The Little Girl thought it was time to write in her notebook, which she did. And then she lay down for a nap on the comfy library couch.

The Unicorn joined her and fell sound asleep. The Little Girl thanked god for letting her live with the Unicorn. She made a card for the Unicorn and put it in a bag with a lollipop.

When she woke up, the Unicorn said, “Thank you.” And the Unicorn read the card out loud, and it made her very happy. The Little Girl fell asleep, and the Unicorn made a present with chocolates.

Later, the Little Girl read her card out loud and loved it too, and gave Unicorn a hug. She said, “I could never do this without you.”

Chapter 5

One morning, the Little Girl decided that she wanted to go skiing because it was a very snowy day. So she waited for Unicorn to wake up, who said she wanted to go sledding. So they agreed to rotate and take turns on the mountain behind the Diamond Castle.

On one trip up the mountain, they saw a cave. Inside the cave, they saw a glowing fire, a yeti, and another unicorn. The Yeti was scared. The new unicorn was purple with a yellow mane and named Starlight.

Unicorn said, “Hi!”

And the Yeti said “hi” shyly.

Starlight said, “Do you want to help us paint our cave house?”

The Little Girl said, “Yes!”

Then the Little Girl and Unicorn helped Starlight power up a magic paint sprayer to spray the walls rainbow. The Yeti was very messy and happy and said, “I would be very happy to see you again soon. When it’s not snowing, we don’t always stay in this cave. Right now we’re staying down even deeper where it’s darker, so we don’t have to deal with the eagles and all their racket, and it’s easier for us to see with our flashlights.”

The Girl and Unicorn said goodbye. They skied home, and it was really fun. Unicorn fell down onto her horn but she was fine so she snorted and it was really funny. They decided it was time for a late breakfast, so Unicorn made waffles with chocolate chips on top, and the Girl made drinks with water, ice, and layers of strawberries, which was very refreshing. It was a very good meal.

After the meal, they agreed it was quiet time. The Girl picked some apples from the castle tree garden, and then she read a book on the bench next to the bush where Pupsicle lived. The Unicorn was fast asleep. Pupsicle was picking his rainbow carrots, and the Little Girl was reading about fruits and vegetables. The Unicorn woke up, yawned, and stretched.

The Unicorn went to the garden shed and got her watering can. All of the plants were ready to be picked. Unicorn started picking the plants and putting them in her large bowl for the kitchen. Then Unicorn decided to go sit and write in her diary about the year.

The Girl decided to go visit Owly to see how her wing was healing. The Girl passed the lake and honey trees, garden, and Seaweed Palace, and then arrived. “Hello, is there anyone in the tree?”

Owly came out and was all better. “Thank you for coming to visit, I just knew you’d come soon! But where is Unicorn?” Owly asked.

“She’s writing something, but she’s going to come visit later.”

Owly asked if she wanted to pick some carrots from this carrot patch, but the Girl said that they just harvested some carrots from the castle. She was a bit tired from her journey, so she sat on a bench to read some more, but then drifted off to sleep.

She woke up and started walking back to the castle. She passed more honey trees, apple trees, pear trees, and blackberry bushes. She put her book back in her straw bag, and she picked some of each for her basket on the way home.

For supper, they had honey cookies with milk. Then, the Little Girl washed the blackberries and put them in a jar for later. The Little Girl rested in bed, and the Unicorn read her book. Then they both went to sleep.

Chapter 6

One day, Pupsicle and the Little Girl went off in the rain. They saw a pug waiting, and the Girl said, “My Unicorn friend could give you a pug castle because you look lonely walking in the rain.”The Pug said, “Woof woof yes.”Then Unicorn came out and made him a special little pug castle. The Pug was so excited when it was done he ran in and said, “Thank you thank you thank you.”

Then it was time for Unicorn and the Girl to have supper, so they invited the Pug over. They made the food that they harvested from their farm. It was really fresh and yummy. Then the Pug went back to his castle to read and relax.

Pupsicle was busy eating popsicles, so he didn’t see the new castle until he came back from his yoga class. He told the Pug, “Congrats and welcome to the neighborhood!” The Pug said thank you and whistled, and a fox came.

Bun-Bun said, “Hi Fox, please don’t eat me.”

The Fox said, “Don’t worry, I’m just here to visit my friend and see if he might have a popsicle for me.”

The Girl and the Unicorn were working on a cheerleading dance. “Purple fans, we want to see you stomp and shake it.” As they performed for the rest of the animals, it started to rain, so everyone went inside, even the animals that lived outside.

They all decided to sleep in the same room. The Girl sewed bedding and lovies for all the animals. Then it was time for dinner, so they had pasta with coconut water. Then the Little Girl tried on a hat she knitted. They all got into their new forest beds and went to sleep.

Chapter 7

One day, the Little Girl woke up and went to the garden. It was empty. She planted potatoes and tomatoes. Since they were magic, they sprouted by the time the unicorn woke up. The flower beds were messy, so they picked and planted new flowers. They too bloomed by the time the others woke up. To pass the time, they read some books about flowers. They had PB&J for breakfast, cut into the shape of the Unicorn’s head.

After breakfast, the Little Girl read a book and kept reading and reading until she fell asleep for a nap.

Later, the Girl and the Unicorn were on a walk by the river, and they found two beavers playing tennis who offered to give them lessons. The Beavers were shaking their tails to hit the ball, but the Girl and the Unicorn needed to use rackets. The Unicorn held hers in her magic mane.

Then, they decided to go and get a snack to cool them off from playing tennis in the sun. They sat in a cool spot near the castle, and it was nice and shady. They had a drink of water and read books about dams. They decided to cool off some more in the river. The Little Girl had a ton of fun in her bathing suit, and Unicorn made a magic floaty using her horn and also gave everyone sunglasses. It was fantastically fun.

Then they said bye and went home, and the Little Girl decided to bake some beaver treats to say thank you for the lessons. They were so excited to give the present to the Beavers.

They saw Narwhal swimming in the castle lake and said hello. “It’s such a beautiful day outside, don’t you think we should lie down on this towel by the water and read books?”

They made lemonade and rested on the super soft beach towels. The Little Girl fell asleep again while the Unicorn was reading because she was so comfortable, and then the Unicorn fell asleep too.

After their second nap, it was dinnertime. They went back to the Beavers and brought their special snacks, and the Beavers said “thank you,” and the Beavers also had a thank you present for them to say thank you for reading them books earlier. Then, they all had dinner of pasta, meatballs, and sourdough bread together and enjoyed their special treats, cakes, drinks, and refreshments.

The Unicorn also brought some extra sourdough starter to share. It was a good meal, and the meal was so good that the Girl got very sleepy. The Unicorn began to carry her back home, but then they heard a voice saying, “Come over, it’s about to rain,” so they stopped at Pupsicle’s castle to stay dry, read stories, and have a sleepover.

Chapter 8

One day, a dragon came and burned all of their apples. The Girl and the Unicorn went outside to see what happened, and they went to the castle top to meet all their friends and see the burned trees. They were very sad.

The next day, they invited the Dragon over, and the Dragon was actually nice. They gave him some tea, and the Dragon promised them he would never do it again, so they gave him some apple cider from what was left.

The Dragon explained that he had just come from a different country and was trying to be friendly and make new friends. They decided to have a big party and invited all the other animals. It lasted for a long time, all the way until noon.

Then a snake came by, and he said, “Why don’t all you guys live together? You’re all animals, after all.”

“What a good idea,” the Little Girl said. “Unicorn can make habitats for everyone.”

Snake said, “Since I helped you with this good idea, can you make me one too?”

And the Unicorn said, “Sure, I’ll make you your own castle just across the road.” Poof. It was done.

Then the Snake said, “There’s no food inside.”

The Unicorn said, “I can help with that too if you want, but please don’t eat us.”

“Never,” said the Snake.

Once everyone had their houses, they had a campout, and the Dragon helped make a big campfire. They had s’mores and lived happily ever after. And no one got bitten by any bugs.

THE END
